Fandom wanking

nephirSo there seems to be a kerfluffel in the BtVS fandom.
Was there a memo sent out about it? I must have missed it.
People will always find something to bitch about. Regardless of the time and place. In the fanfiction fandom it's especially true.
There's a writer out there who absolutely hates one of my favorite characters and often uses them (the character) to show their own fears and hatreds. Do I read their stuff... occasionally. My one true complaint with the writer is that they do not use a beta or a spell check program. I can live with the occasional typo -- I'm a friggin' poor speller myself, but I know how to use spell check and I do so on any fiction I put out. I also run it past friends and family (and you've never lived until you've asked your best gay friend to critique your slash sex scenes in the middle of the coffee shop!).
Do I send them snotty emails or post nasty things about them because of this flaw? No. Because I am an adult. And I try to react and respond in an adult way (and believe me buddy, that's hard for me to do sometimes!!!!). Do I send constructive feedback that isn't a flaming torch to a gas soaked pile of tender? Yeah...occasionally, if something about the story really made an impact (good or bad). Luckily an author stepped in with a cooler hand and response that I could have come up with in this particular case. Since then their writing has improved drastically. Because after much exchanging of emails and some inflammatory remarks on one side, they were able to finally meet eye to eye on the topic.
I don't know what went on in the BtVS fandom...all I really want is for the friends that were hurt to feel better and to keep writing.
Writers write because they have a story to tell. It may not be the same story that readers want to read, but that is where choice comes in. If you don't like a story, then don't read it. It's that freakin' simple.
