I survived the holidays!
Tuesday morning, we packed the car and left the Youngest Spawn at home to house/cat/fish sit while the rest of us (The Spouse and the Eldest Spawn) headed Southeast to the Tricities to spend the holidays with the Middle Spawn, the Sgt & The Spawnlette. We had a deadline to meet as The Middle Spawn wanted to have family pictures made on Wednesday.
The trip across the pass was nice; the roads had been plowed and were bare and wet. I had been mildly concerned about Manatash Ridge where earlier in the morning it had been snowing. Luckily it had been plowed recently and was easy to cross.
Got the Tricities and registered at a local hotel and headed out to the kids place to let them know we were there.
Over the next couple of days we did some shopping with the kids, got out pictures made and made plans for Christmas day.
My biggest problem with getting my picture made is the roscea that I have - even if its not flared up the flash brings it out like whoa! What a shock and pain. So the pictures will all look like I've been drinking or I am overheated. I'd like to have pictures made but I am guessing that it'll need to be done outdoors or with no flash.
Christmas Eve we headed out to a local theater to see Red. For years we've gone to the movies and bowling as our family Christmas Day treat since we actually celebrate the Winter Solstice on the 21st, so Christmas Day is a free day to do things with friends and family. I've noticed that it's becoming a popular thing to do for more families. The theater was changing the movies on Christmas Day so this was my last chance to see Red.
So, my flist, I have a bone to pick with you! Why didn't you tell me Red was as kickass as I'd expected? You are fired! Karl Urban rocked, Bruce Willis and Helen Mirrin! Oh swoon! It was glorious.
Christmas Day we gathered again as the apartment of the kids to exchange gifts -- since they couldn't come up this way for Solstice due to job/travel restrictions, we agreed to travel down there after the Solstice to exchange gifts.
This was the first Solstice/Christmas for the Spawnlette and we were all really excited to help her unwrap her gifts and play with her toys *grin*. Such fun! to celebrate through the eyes of a very small child!
For dinner we did what many others that don't celebrate the holiday do, we went out for Chinese food *grin*
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and this morning we packed up our hotel room, swung by the apartment and hugged and kissed the kids and hit the road back home, racing a storm headed for the mountains. Luckily we were able to get across before too much snow had fallen and made it home early this afternoon.
The Youngest Spawn and animals were happy to see us return and we were happy to see our beds again.
